SPINDLE AND EPITHELIOID CELL NEVUS (SPITZ)
This is another example of a spindle and epithelioid cell nevus or melanocytoma of Spitz. The patient is 5 years old, and the lesion had some of the clinical features of a pyogenic granuloma. Other examples are presented elsewhere Case1, Case2, Case3, Case4.

Scan power view.
Medium power view. The pronounced vascularity accounts for the clinical impression of pyogenic granuloma. Kamino bodies (pink blobs) are numerous. Edema is prominent and was one of the features originally emphasized by Spitz.
High power view. This is an area of lymphocyte reaction. It is interesting that large, round nevus cells such as are seen here  can be found in some halo nevi.
Another high power view. An occasional, isolated, cytologically atypical cell is not indicative of malignancy in this setting. An expansile cluster of such cells in this setting would be characteristic of a minimal deviation melanoma with Spitz nevus features.
