NEVUS SEBACEUS OF JADASSOHN WITH SEBACEOUS HYPERPLASIA, SEBACEOMA, AND PSEUDOCARCINOMA; FACIAL
Though nevus sebaceus of Jadassohn (NSJ) is classically located on the scalp, lesions of similar histogenesis occur elsewhere, particularly on the face.  Some of the general properties are discussed elsewhere. In this particular example, there is verrucoid hyperplasia of infundibular type epithelium in addition to a focus of mature sebaceous hyperplasia, a focus of sebaceoma, and a focus of pseudocarcinoma.

This verrucoid, oval lesion appeared during adolescence on the preauricular part of the face.

Composite scan power view. The sebaceous unit in the black rectangle is located abnormally close to the surface. Examination of the dermis deep to this illustration failed to reveal hair follicles. Normal follicles were on each side of the lesion.
Low power view of the area in the black rectangle. This is a relatively mature focus of sebaceous hyperplasia.
Low power view of the area in the yellow rectangle.
High power view of the picture above. This component would qualify as a sebaceoma.
High power view of the area in the red rectangle. Primitive follicular differenctiation within a NSJ can be mistaken for basal cell carcinoma.
