LOBULAR CAPILLARY HEMANGIOMA HAVING SUPERFICIAL AND DEEP COMPONENTS
This is an example of a lobular capillary hemangioma (LCH) that has components involving the papillary dermis, reticular dermis, and which approaches the subcutis. The main discussion of lobular capillary hemangiomas is ELSEWHERE.

From the hand of an adult female:

Composite scan power view. A sweat gland (barely visible) is at the bottom of the specimen. The lobular nature of the vascular aggregates within the papillary dermis is less apparent than seen in the early, superficial LCH depicted elsewhere.
High power view from the superficial part of the picture. Endothelial cells line vascular lumina, and pericytes are found in a background of delicately fibrillar stroma.
Composite medium power view from the lower right side of the scan power view. The lobule at the top of the picture is bounded by glassy or hyalinized collagen.
High power view of the blood vessel in the lower part of the picture above. Spindle cells having the features of smooth muscle are seen in the wall of the vessel in the right side of the picture. There is hyperplasia of pericytes or, possibly, transformation of smooth muscle cells into pericytes in the remainder of the picture.
