HEMANGIOMA/VASCULAR MALFORMATION WITH ADJECTIVE OF CHOICE
Several attempts have been made to establish terminology distinguishing
between hemangiomas and vascular malformations or hamartomas. Universal
agreement is lacking, and the confusion is further compounded by the adjectives
applied to such lesions. The thick vessels, possible smooth muscle in the
walls, and lack of angioblastic stroma in this particular case would justify
a diagnosis of arteriovenous hemangioma or arteriovenous malformation.
It might also be simply classified as a vascular malformation since the
'arteriovenous' nature is only implied by the thick walls of the vessels.
How about 'cavernous hemangioma'?
Scan demonstrating involvement of dermis and subcutis.
Low power of dermal component.
High power showing thick walls, mostly fibrous but
possibly some smooth muscle.
