FIBROEPITHELIAL FOLLICULOSEBACEOUS HAMARTOMA

HAVING SOME OF THE FEATURES OF A FOLLICULOSEBACEOUS CYSTIC HAMARTOMAREF 1
Solitary lesion from a 35 year old male.

The fibrous follicular sheath component of this hamartoma is prominent. Sebaceous units are dominant in this example, and there is a suggestion of cyst formation in the scan power view. Deeper sections demonstrated a connection with the epidermis.

This tumor and related tumors are mentioned in the discussion of  perifollicular fibromas.

Scan power view. The arrows mark the interface of  the tumor (lower left) and the reticular dermis (upper right).
Low power view of above. Note the difference between the reticular dermis collagen pattern (above and right of the arrows) and the tumor stroma (below and left of the arrows).
High power veiw from the interior of the tumor. The collagen fibers are coarse and intersect the epithelium in a perpendicular fashion similar to that found in fibrous papules of the nose and in other fibroepithelial folliculosebaceous hamartomas.
Another scan power view from a deeper section that shows an area of connection with the epidermal surface.
