FOCAL DERMAL MUCINOSIS
This biopsy represents the clinical extent of a solitary lesion from the shoulder of an adult. None of the sections demonstrated a follicular remnant.

A significant step in making the diagnosis of focal dermal mucinosis is the exclusion of the numerous tumors, benign and malignant, that may have mucinous variants. The usual example of focal mucinosis is characterized by the presence of abundant superficial tissue mucin in a hypocellular background that is devoid of many blood vessels.
