A significant step in making the diagnosis of focal dermal mucinosis
is the exclusion of the numerous tumors, benign and malignant, that may
have mucinous variants. The usual example of focal mucinosis is characterized
by the presence of abundant superficial tissue mucin in a hypocellular
background that is devoid of many blood vessels.
