Stroma that is chondroid or basophilic within the background of a benign tumor having sweat unit differentiation is the distinguishing feature of chondroid syringomas.


The diagnostic importance of the stroma cannot be overemphasized. Although true cartilage may be present, true cartilage is often absent. Of equal importance are:

pools of tissue mucin

variably cellular basophilic foci

Chondroid syringomas are divided into two groups based upon the characteristics of the tubules or lumina.
variant wherein there are large, elongate, multilayered, or complex tubules
These tumors may be located: The tumors may be:
very well circumscribed

appear to be infiltrating

The epithelial or spindle cell elements may: Follicular differentiation may be present.
